Is Reddit Safe for Penny Stock Information?

By Edward Sylvan Public Company CEO

Is Reddit safe? That depends on what you’re using it for.

If you’re looking for penny stock information, Reddit can be a great place to discover companies, hear different opinions and see what retail investors are talking about.

But should you trust anonymous investors telling you which stocks to buy?

Absolutely not.

I run a publicly traded company, and one thing I’ve learned is that most retail investors spend more time researching stock prices than researching how the companies actually finance themselves.

That’s where investors get into trouble.

The Problem With Reddit Stock Advice

Look at this Reddit discussion about avoiding penny stock scams. Investors are discussing dilution, financial statements and warning signs.

Those are conversations worth having.

The problem begins when investors confuse popularity with credibility.

A stock receiving hundreds of upvotes doesn’t necessarily make it a good investment.

Someone posting screenshots of enormous profits doesn’t tell you anything about the company’s financial condition.

The SEC has warned investors about social media stock-tip scams.

What Retail Investors Should Really Research

Before buying a penny stock, I want investors to understand three things.

Who is financing the company?

How much dilution could existing shareholders face?

What is management doing with the money?

These questions matter more than rocket emojis or promises of an impending short squeeze.

In my article Stock Dilution Reddit: I Want Retail Investors to Dilute Themselves, I explain why existing shareholders should have opportunities to finance their companies instead of constantly relying on outside financiers.

I’ve also written about How to Find Penny Stocks Before They Explode by studying capital formation rather than chasing momentum.

My View as a Public Company CEO

Reddit isn’t the enemy of retail investors.

Ignorance is.

Retail investors have tremendous collective resources, but they’re often disorganized and focused on short-term trading.

Professional capital providers understand financing agreements, convertible notes and equity offerings.

Retail investors should understand those things too.

Use Reddit to discover ideas. Use financial disclosures to investigate them. Make your own decisions.

The opportunity isn’t simply finding the next penny stock.

It’s learning how the capital markets actually work.
